VIRWICA (Virtual World Innovation and Creativity Award) is an educational framework that positions virtual worlds as epistemic spaces for research-driven learning rather than purely creative or technical environments. The initiative requires students to investigate real-world problems, ground their virtual designs in empirical or contextual research, apply logical reasoning, and defend their decisions through structured argumentation. By integrating research literacy, higher-order thinking, and argumentation into virtual world–based projects, VIRWICA shifts the focus from technological novelty to intellectual rigor. This presentation outlines the pedagogical rationale, design principles, and assessment logic behind VIRWICA, and discusses how virtual environments can function as cognitive tools to support meaningful, transferable learning outcomes and long-term educational career readiness.

Objectives:

  • Participants will be able to explain how virtual worlds support research-driven, epistemic learning.
  • Participants will be able to identify pedagogical principles for research, logic, and argumentation

Insights Connection:
This proposal aligns with the Insights conference theme by examining how immersive and digital environments can be designed to support deep thinking, evidence-based reasoning, and knowledge construction. Rather than focusing on technology adoption alone, the presentation highlights how intentional pedagogical design in virtual worlds enables insight generation through research, logical coherence, and argumentation, contributing to more meaningful and future-oriented educational practices.
