VWBPE: Insights

March 19-21, 2026

Above the Book

Insights come in many forms — a conversation that reframes what you thought you knew, a moment of recognition across years of practice, or a quiet shift in perspective that only distance makes visible. This year’s Above the Book sessions are designed to surface exactly those kinds of moments, pairing candid dialogue with guests whose contributions to virtual worlds education run deep.

The name itself sets the tone. Discantus supra librum — “above the book” — describes the medieval practice of improvising a new melody over a fixed written score, two distinct voices combining into something neither could produce alone. That spirit carries into both sessions this year. The first welcomes Grumpity Linden and Patch Linden of Linden Lab for a conversation about the platform at the heart of so much of what this community builds and teaches. The second gathers a remarkable group of Thinkerer Award recipients — VWBPE’s recognition of individuals whose leadership and lifelong service have helped shape and sustain this community — whose collective experience spans more than a decade of virtual worlds education. Together, these two sessions invite us to look back with clarity and forward with intention.

Catching Up with the Lindens

Friday, 20 March, 1:00pm SLT

The Lindens are coming! As much as we look forward to seeing them at the conferences, they enjoy coming to share news and updates, and to strengthen connections between the Lab and the education community in SL.

Join us at the VWBPE main auditorium as Grumpity and Patch share share developments and initiatives to support education in immersive environments.

Grumpity Linden Grumpity Linden is the Senior Vice President of Product at Linden Lab. She loves to dig into the intricacies of the Second Life economy and think about the evolution of the world as we make SL accessible across multiple platforms including Mobile and browser.

Grumpity is endlessly inspired—and honestly humbled—by the creativity, resilience, and community spirit of Second Life Residents. She sees her role not just as building features and fixing bugs, but as helping steward a world that belongs to its people.

Patch LindenPatch Linden is the Senior Vice President of Product Operations. A Resident since 2004, Patch was born into Second Life as a Linden in September of 2007, and has fulfilled a variety of roles from support to product since then. Now the Sr. VP of Product Operations, Patch works to bring the best of product and support based decisions on a daily operational basis to the virtual world platform for Second Life. Patch also maintains oversight on how all of the various teams within Linden Lab can best work together for the highest good of the residents and the business.
