Venue: Workshop B – The Ruins

If you are a curious explorer, technologist, or complete beginner, you will not require any maths or physics, just a curiosity and willingness to think a little differently. This presentation and exploration is your gateway to quantum computing. A new way of computing that challenges our everyday intuition of how the world works at the quantum level. Designed specifically for the virtual world of Second Life, our learning space include web media, interactions, simulations and notecards that together bring to life the abstract ideas surrounding quantum computing.

The arrival of quantum computers will allow us to break or redesign today’s cryptography, accelerate drug discovery and materials science, optimize complex logistics systems, traffic, and finance and help us to simulate nature at the quantum level—something classical computers struggle to do.

Though still an emerging technology an understanding of quantum computers will position you ahead of a major technological shift.

Objectives:

  • Students will be able to explain the basic idea behind quantum entanglement and superposition.
  • Students will be able to describe the historical context and application of quantum computing.

Insights Connection:
The learning space will leverage knowledge building through active participation through exploration and problem-solving (Honebein, 1996). From the work of (Kolb,D, A, 2001) experiential learning is one of the strongest justifications for a virtual learning space with learning through experience and reflection. With emphasis on benefits for social learning the session will support the cognitive, teaching and social presence for a Community of Enquiry (Garrison.R et.al, 2000).

Accessibility: Provide a written script during the presentation.
