Call for Volunteers

Every year at VWBPE, our volunteers have always provided an outstanding level of support to conference participants and presenters. If you would like to help at the upcoming conference, we would be delighted to have you.

Volunteers will be needed in Second Life and AvaCon Grid/OpenSim, in the following areas:

Second Life AvaCon Grid (OpenSim)
  • VWBPE Central (Main Stage only)
  • VWBPE South 1 (Workshops)
  • VWBPE South 2 (Exhibits)
  • VWBPE Gateway
  • VWBPE Gateway (Hypergrid Enabled – Main Landing Point)
  • VWBPE Central (Not Hypergrid Enabled – Main Venue)

Parcel Managers

  • Will have parcel privileges
  • Assist presenters with technical concerns and logistical issues when Mentors are not available
  • Provide assistance to the Organisational Committee as needed
  • 1 hour training with Nigma Sterling
  • More experienced SL veteran
  • Minimum time commitment: 4-hour blocks

Moderators

  • Introduce Featured Panels
  • Assist Panel Discussion In-World
  • Mediate discussion
  • Keep track of time – Featured Panels are 110 minutes
  • Minimum time commitment: 2 hours (Featured Panel – 110 min + prep)

Quadrivium Facilitators

  • Lead Quadrivium Discussion In-World
  • Encourage Audience Participation
  • Trained on SpeakEasy HUD
  • Submit a Quadrivium Facilitator’s JoVS article for website
  • Minimum time commitment: 1 hour + 2 hours (Quadrivium + Report)

Quadrivium Assistants

  • Introduce Quadrivium Facilitator
  • Assist Quadrivium Discussion In-World as needed
  • Copy text chat for Quadrivium Facilitator’s report
  • Keep track of time – Quadrivium is 50 minutes
  • Trained on SpeakEasy HUD
  • Assist if any technical problems arise
  • Minimum time commitment: 1 hour + 2 hours (Quadrivium + Report)

Mentors

  • A Mentor is a pre- and during- conference one-on-one support person for the presenter. Presenters are matched to a mentor. Mentors are needed for both Second Life and OpenSim (AvaCon).
    • Trained on presentation tools used in the different venues
    • Ensure Presenter has the appropriate presentation tools for their assigned venue
    • Train Presenter on the presentation tools, if needed
    • Meet Presenter in the Green Room for the assigned venue
    • Watch the presentation and assist with any technical problems
    • Keep track of the presentation time – presentations are 50 minutes
    • Mentor may be assigned more than one Presenter to assist
    • When not assigned to a Presenter or actively working with one, a Mentor may be stationed in a venue to help with the following tasks:
      • Serve as a standby Mentor if a presenter’s assigned Mentor is not available
      • Assist the Parcel Manager as needed
      • Liaison with the VWBPE Show Office at the Gateway on any technical or security issues
      • Assist the Parcel Manager with any technical problems that may arise
      • Meet and Greet as needed
    • Minimum time commitment: Per presenter, varies from 1 to 3 hours, depending on Presenter’s experience level; if not assigned to a presenter, 1 hour block minimum

Meet and Greet

  • Familiar with VWBPE areas in Second Life and/or OpenSim (AvaCon)
  • Welcome participants
  • Direct conference participants to venues, answer questions, give swag bags, etc.
  • Share cool “stuff” you have for SL/AvaCon
  • Minimum time commitment: 1-hour blocks (although longer would be better)

Streaming

  • The Streaming Team will be trained and led by Dave/Kai:
    • experience preferred but not required
    • comfortable with camera movement inworld
    • SpaceNavigator a plus
    • Broadband connection
    • Wired connection preferred, but ok if wifi is solid
    • Reasonably strong computer
    • Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment
    • Willing to learn
  • Provide streaming for events happening on VWBPE Main Stage/Rockcliffe/U of Idaho/TV Studio
  • Minimum time commitment: 4-hour blocks (although longer would be better)
