VWBPE17 LEGACY: Call for Proposals

vwbpe17-legacy-logo1Virtual Worlds Best Practices celebrates ten years, and we want you to share in the legacy.

Because we had great success with our categories last year, we will have the same categories this year. Help us celebrate our legacy by looking forward to the next ten years, and looking backwards to the accomplishments that would only have been possible with virtual environments like Second Life and OpenSimulator.

Looking Forward

Do you have a new project, research, service, or tool that you wish to share with us, something you have never before presented at VWBPE or elsewhere? Submit a proposal to start building the legacy for the future.

Looking Back

Do you wish to do a retrospective view of a past VWBPE session, where you share lessons, new research or updates, to your original presented work? Submit a retro proposal to help us look back at the legacy you helped us create, and how it has impacted current practice.

Here is what you do to determine where your proposal fits:

  • Is it research? Submit to the Academic category as a full paper submission.
  • Is it a project, service or tool that benefits educators? Submit to the Communities of Practice category with an abstract and presentation objectives.
  • Is it an exhibit/poster or video? Submit to the Creative category with a description, and for videos, links.
  • Is it an immersive, interactive location or game? Submit to Immersive Experiences category with an abstract, location, and access information.

Once you have determined the category, you will then determine a track, format, and venue. Please note that some categories have different choices.

Finally, you will go to the submission form via the button in the “SUBMIT!” tab for the category.

Also, please be prepared to fully complete your submission; saving drafts will not be available this year. Revisions will be permitted after the review process, but only if requested by the committee.

Don’t wait – FINAL deadline to submit your proposal is January 27, 2017!

Category: Academic

The Academic category includes research and best practices applications within educational settings that use virtual worlds, both traditional and corporate, to share findings and implications for innovative practice.

Submitting to the academic category means a submission of a paper, which will undergo a blind peer review. The requirements for submission are found in the VWBPE 2017 Academic Paper Submission Guidelines.

The following tracks or topics are available:

K-12 Best Practices
Higher Education/College Best Practices
Games and Simulations
Tools and Products
Advocacy

Your proposal may be one of the following three formats, which vary in length and venue needs:

Lecture (50 minute, mostly lecture and discussion based)
Workshop (110 minutes, hands on and experiential)
Panel (discussion with 3-6 panelists)

Presentations in this will be hosted in two venues, which have been set up for conference specific needs. The Programs committee schedules your presentation based on the format and venue you select upon submitting a proposal, and the available sims. These are your choices:

Second Life
AvaCon Grid

This option is to indicate if your presentation will be retrospective in content. This is work that shares lessons, new research or updates on original work presented in a past VWBPE session, from any of the last nine years.

Category: Communities of Practice

The Communities of Practice category is for two groups of presenters:

  • Those who support education or research, but who are not academics, educators, or directly connected to schools or educational organizations. These may include non-profit organizations, developers or designers, tool providers, and other individuals who offer training and support for educators, but who are not educators themselves.
  • K-12 educators engaging students in learning experiences through virtual worlds.

Like the Academic category, this category also undergoes a blind peer review composed of members of the community. However, submissions under this category are not required to include a full paper.

The following tracks or topics are available:

Field Practices
Games and Simulations
Tools and Products
Advocacy
K-12 Best Practices

Your proposal may be one of the following four formats, which vary in length and venue needs:

Lecture (50 minute, mostly lecture and discussion based)
Workshop (110 minutes, hands on and experiential)
Panel (discussion with 3-6 panelists)
Power Promos (20 minute opportunity to promote a product that supports education: see submission guidelines for details)

Category: Creative

The Creative category is for both academics and communities of practice, who wish to showcase their creative works in virtual worlds through artistic expression in order to promote their organization or achievements. This includes exhibits and machinima.

Submissions to this category are VWBPE committee reviewed and require an already developed product for showcasing.

The following tracks or topics are available:

K-12 Best Practices
Higher Education/College Best Practices
Field Practices
Games and Simulations
Tools and Products
Advocacy

Your proposal may be one of the following three formats, which vary in length and venue needs:

Exhibits: Guidelines
Machinima: Guidelines

The creative category has only one choice of venue due to resources available to the conference. Accepted submissions to this category will all be hosted in Second Life.

This option is to indicate if your presentation will be retrospective in content. This is work that shares lessons, new research or updates on original work presented in a past VWBPE session, from any of the last nine years.

SUBMISSIONS CLOSED

Category: Immersive Experiences

The Immersive Experiences category showcases locations whose main objective is interaction, immersion, and engagement for those who enter them, whether to play a game, solve an immersive problem, or engage participants in hands-on, interactive learning.

Immersive Experiences submissions require a guide to provide basic instruction on the interface of the platform. Time should be spent mainly on having the participants play, immerse, or engage with the location, not just “touring” it.

Submissions to the immersive experiences category are VWBPE committee reviewed and require already existing and ready for use locations or platforms. Because of the length of time required for these experiences, these will be hosted pre- and post-conference. If a proposal is selected for inclusion, it will be scheduled two weeks before conference, or one week after, depending on availability and timing.

The following tracks or topics are available:

K-12 Best Practices
Higher Education/College Best Practices
Field Practices
Games and Simulations
Tools and Products
Advocacy

In the immersive experiences category, your proposal may be one of the following two formats:

Virtual Worlds: Guidelines for Virtual Worlds
Wanna Play?: Guidelines for Wanna Play?

The immersive experiences category has a wide open option for venues, but they do fall under two general venue types, as long as they can be accessed through a computer, not a specific gaming console. Specific details on access must be submitted with the proposal. These are your choices:

3D Virtual Environment
Gaming Platform

Find out about hyping your platform by participation in our [Passport to the Metaverse].

This option is to indicate if your presentation will be retrospective in content. This is work that shares lessons, new research or updates on original work presented in a past VWBPE session, from any of the last nine years.
