Venue: Outdoor Tea Ceremony in Kyoto

It is mid-spring in Japan and Sakura has begun to bloom in soft pinks as the weather warms.

Kyoto invites the VWBPE Conference to enjoy a tea ceremony hosted by geiko (geisha) and maiko (apprentice geisha) on Saturday, the 21st, at 10 am SLT.

We will be setting up “nodate” in a large tent on the grounds of Kitano Tenmangu Shrine.

Nodate means to enjoy tea ceremony outdoors. It is a popular tea ceremony because it allows people to enjoy tea while enjoying the beauty of nature, rather than the rigid formalities of a tea ceremony held in a tearoom, and they are frequently held in Japanese gardens and scenic parks.

Nodate is said to have originated when Sen no Rikyu, the famous tea master who accompanied Toyotomi Hideyoshi during his campaign to pacify the Kyushu region more than 500 years ago, served tea in the open air.

═══════🏮══🎴══🏮 Who or what are Geisha? 🏮══ 🎴══🏮═══════

Geisha are said to be “a Japanese treasure that embodies the traditional performing arts.”
In Kyoto, geisha are known are “geiko” and their apprentices “maiko” are very famous for their beauty and skills.

Geisha are dancers, musicians, hostesses, and confidantes. They are trained in hospitality and traditional Japanese performance arts. They learn traditional dance, to play music on various instruments, and they also learn and practice tea ceremony.

Geisha perform privately at traditional-style banquets in tea houses known as “ozashiki”, or at larger events such as weddings, anniversaries, promotions and other celebratory occasions.

The geiko and maiko will perform two traditional dances for the entertainment of the guests, as well.
The dances are replications of the real-life dances, and the music is also the real music geisha dance to. We hope you enjoy it.
