Friends of the Library Selfie Portraits Activity @ Community Virtual Library in Kitely
Mar 15 @ 01:00 PM – 02:30 PM
Friends of the Library Selfie Portraits Activity @ Community Virtual Library in Kitely

Join host Bethany Winslow to create a selfie for the Friends of the Library wall at Community Virtual Library location in Kitely! This activity was designed as an Open Educational Resource that allows a new event organizer to provide visitors with an easy building project for a more engaging event. Having content with pre-built instructions and resources to give to your own participants makes it easy for you to replicate this activity. This is especially useful for busy educators who are newer to hosting virtual world events.

Access:

We’ll meet in front of the Hypergrid Resources Library on the Cookie II region of Kitely. You can use an OpenSim hypergrid enabled account or a Kitely account. Here is the CVL hypergrid address – grid.kitely.com:8002:Cookie II (NOTE: Kitely are virtual worlds “on-demand”. You may get a pop up that the teleport has failed and the world is being started. This is normal.)

From the welcome center on Cookie II, use the local teleport to the Hypergrid Resources Library. Here are some short tutorial videos that may help you:

Immersive Language Learning in Virtual Worlds @ VWBPE Lecture Area A
Mar 27 @ 11:00 AM – 11:50 AM
Immersive Language Learning in Virtual Worlds @ VWBPE Lecture Area A

Speakers: Heike Philp / Gwen Gwasi; Jennifer Hamilton / Jaz Beverly; Annalisa di Pierro / Innesfree;  and Helena Galani /erlinaazure

To learn a language live online is the best and sometimes cheapest way of practicing it in real-time with other people. Virtual worlds and video games offer opportunities to meet speakers of other languages and native speakers alike but there are many 3D spaces out there and sometimes it is difficult to decide which one to join. Which virtual world is suitable for language education? What kind of equipment or software does one need? How long does it take to get to know this world before it can be introduced to language learners? Is this virtual space safe? With these questions in mind, a group of language educators spent 5 weeks exploring 13 different 3D environments, created an evaluation rubric and listened to some of the long-time users of these environments for the pros and cons.

  • To present the findings of a 5-week online workshop exploring various virtual worlds.
  • To consider some of the lessons learned by the providers of these environments. For example, how one can combine Artificial Intelligence with NPC in OpenSim to create chatbots.

Mindscape @ MindScape
Mar 31 @ 02:00 PM – 03:30 PM
Mindscape @ MindScape

Host: Asmita Duranjaya

“MindScape” is related to brain research and what can refer to the human mind, how to develop, inspire and care for or manipulate it. 15 artists have created either a 2D or a 3D work referring to the topic by adding his or her idea, be it more realistic-physical or more mental or philosophical abstract. The 3D area is a moon landscape, where the 50-prim-installations are presented.

  • Participants will be able to observe the installations and pictures and to interact with them.
  • Participants will be motivated to develop their own idea about what MIND can be and do for them.

Accessibility: Provide a written script during the presentation. Bots provide information on the art installations.
