Survey Says! Developing Criteria for VR Courses @ VWBPE Lecture Area B

In Fall 2019, San Jose State University’s Virtual Center for Archives and Records Administration developed a survey to determine criteria for courses based in both desktop and headset Virtual Reality. 56 VR and virtual world educators responded, and the survey resulted in 29 criteria. In this presentation, VCARA members address key factors that affected the survey, how the results compared to expectations, and how research and experience in virtual worlds contributed to the survey’s success.

  • Participants will be able to describe VCARA’s survey methodology and identify VR course criteria.
  • Participants will be able to compare educators’ needs in headset/desktop VR vs. 3D virtual worlds.

You will have a chance to take photos with friends and mingle with other guests before the immersive performance by DeJa Vu – a ballet group. Come early to get some bubbly and a good seat,  then sit back and enjoy the show!

Lorelle VanFossen is the co-founder of Educators in VR, and producer of the world’s largest immersive virtual conference, the 2020 Educators in VR International Summit, held in February. She is an educator, keynote speaker, trainer, writer, and consultant on virtual reality in education, web writing, digital storytelling, content curation, social media, and blogging. Called a digital evangelist, she’s taught over 1000 workshops and classes in virtual reality and has published over 3,000 articles on digital storytelling, social media, and web publishing as a thought-leader in the industry.

Virtual reality offers opportunities and challenges that impact education (both on head-mounted displays and desktops) for deep learning. Because educators cannot be trained to utilize all of the current virtual reality tools entering the market, professional networking is essential for identifying best practices. The gaming backchannel app DISCORD will be optionally used during this session for interactivity.

  • Participants will investigate the advantages and disadvantages of various VR spaces.
  • Participants will be given specific examples of critical thinking in VR spaces.

Where do our responsibilities lie when working in virtual environments? More importantly, what are the ethics of working in these spaces with our learners? This topic has been addressed by several of our speakers over the last couple of days considering access, privacy, harassment, Terms of Service and software. Join us at the last Quadrivium of the conference as we look for the answers together.

Mindscape @ MindScape

“MindScape” is related to brain research and what can refer to the human mind, how to develop, inspire and care for or manipulate it. 15 artists have created either a 2D or a 3D work referring to the topic by adding his or her idea, be it more realistic-physical or more mental or philosophical abstract. The 3D area is a moon landscape, where the 50-prim-installations are presented.

  • Participants will be able to observe the installations and pictures and to interact with them.
  • Participants will be motivated to develop their own idea about what MIND can be and do for them.

Accessibility: Provide a written script during the presentation. Bots provide information on the art installations.
