This is an advanced technical session, for those who would like to have *large* and *complex* projects in SL or OpenSim, but are concerned about the inherent limits of the programming platform and language (LSL). It is not an introduction to coding. It will include an introduction to terminology.

Stairway to STEM, a National Science Foundation-funded organization helps autistic succeed in post-secondary education. Resources created are geared towards families, autistic students, educators and policymakers. In some cases, online spaces allow autistic people to engage in experiences that would otherwise be out of reach for them. Improving the accessibility of post-secondary education through technology helps autistic people to “reach for the stars” and may lead to gainful employment.

This research used participatory observational case study. Students from Taiwan used a 3D virtual world in their art class to create their artwork. The art teacher taught a lesson called School reconstruction. We observed students how they form their ideal schools, where their ideas coming from, how they discuss and collaborate with each other, as well as how they put their ideas into action, make it into 3D virtual construction, and finally how they see and understand each other’s work.

With global temperatures increasing, the debate is heating up in academia about the value of face to face conferences. Academics travel many miles creating a huge carbon footprint to present at conferences with little proven benefit. Educationalists from resource poor countries have little opportunity to attend such conferences. Virtual and online conferences such as the Virtual International Day of the Midwife and VWBPE are freely accessible to all at minimal cost to planet or academia.

Not only will participants engage in an immersive, interactive experience by using multimodal tools, but also create a plan for using the model with their own learners.

Survey Says! Developing Criteria for VR Courses @ VWBPE Lecture Area B

In Fall 2019, San Jose State University’s Virtual Center for Archives and Records Administration developed a survey to determine criteria for courses based in both desktop and headset Virtual Reality. 56 VR and virtual world educators responded, and the survey resulted in 29 criteria. In this presentation, VCARA members address key factors that affected the survey, how the results compared to expectations, and how research and experience in virtual worlds contributed to the survey’s success.

Workshop: Symbolic Modeling: A Great Teaching Tool @ VWBPE Workshop Area A

We offer a glimpse into a unique training for educators, counselors, artists, coaches and facilitators who wish to discover a way of using arts-based processes (builds, paintings or photos) symbolically in SL. We call this Symbolic Modeling (SymMod). This useful tool can be applied to intellectual, psychological, spiritual or creative processes, both with individuals and with groups. We will be showing a short film, as well as describing and demonstrating the SymMod method.

I will share findings of my research with a small group of K-12 teachers who participated in an online professional development initiative. Issues regarding the quality and effectiveness of professional development for K 12 teachers were addressed by the strengths of an online environment: choice, community building, and extended learning over time. Our efforts at UNM to support Online Instructors with PD, informed by this research, and how this can inform the use Virtual World approaches.

During the development of initial digital technologies, the user was an observer entity that, since it was not involved in the mixing of the real with the virtual, did not feel the direct and instantaneous affectation of the use of said technology itself. Currently, with the new 3D-IDEs technologies, immersion is total, which generates a new problem both with their identity and with their perception of mixed realities, which can affect their moral perception and ethical awareness

Virtual reality offers opportunities and challenges that impact education (both on head-mounted displays and desktops) for deep learning. Because educators cannot be trained to utilize all of the current virtual reality tools entering the market, professional networking is essential for identifying best practices. The gaming backchannel app DISCORD will be optionally used during this session for interactivity.

Interactive Walkthrough Ritual Experience @ Sacred Cauldron

Sacred Caldron houses the virtual campus for Woolston-Steen Theological Seminary. WSTS is an environmentally conscious institution that works to reduce our carbon footprint by drastically reducing the amount of travel necessary to attend and teach at our seminary. We provide a visually rich online learning experience using the Second Life virtual reality platform. From the comfort of their homes, our students are able to connect and learn with other students from around the world in a graphically enticing interactive environment where their teachers give lectures, offer demonstrations, and answer questions in real time.

Our immersive experience will include a walk-through interactive ritual which is season-based. The experience has been designed and constructed by our Junior class as part of their studies.

  • Visitors will become immersed in the “story” or deep mythology related to a season/holiday.

Accessibility: We transcribe the spoken word during activities into text as the event occurs. For the interactive walkthrough, the elements give out notecards with directions as well as “speak” in local text.
